Fluorite with Chalcopyrite from Hardin County, Southern Illinois, United States.

This Illinois Fluorite has dreamy translucent lilac, lavender and blue color-zoning with sparkling Chalcopyrite inclusions. This specimen is an old collection piece, kept in the miners family for decades. It was mined in the 70s or 80s, from the Denton mine, a world renowned locality known for spectacular Fluorite specimens with layered color-zoning and rich saturation.

These high quality Illinois Fluorites are a rare find, since the mines were closed in the 90s. Most of these Fluorite specimens are now in private collections. This Fluorite octahedron was purchased from the miners family by mineral collector and miner, Mike Wild. We later acquired this piece from Mikes collection. The specimen is cleaved and polished, cleaving and polishing Fluorite octahedrons was popular back in the day, during the 60s, 70s and 80s when the mines were in full swing.

Please Note: In the photos, I'm using a standard flashlight to light up the Fluorite and show the various colors throughout the crystal. The last two photos are in bright daylight without the flashlight. Fluorite is best displayed with backlighting or lighting the crystal from below, this shows off the depth and saturation of the crystal with its layered color-zoning and brilliant glow. Without lighting, the Fluorite will have a darker, smoky appearance.
