Vivianite from Amazonas Brazil

Regular price $150.00

Beautiful Vivianite from the Cabeça do Cachorro claim, São Gabriel da Cachoeira, in the Amazonas state of Brazil. This exquisite gemmy deep blue-green Vivianite specimen is a rare find, with exceptional formation, bladed prismatic crystals in brown matrix. The crystals are primarily very deep green with subtle blue flashes and an iridescent glow can also be seen depending on how one holds it in the light. I photographed in natural daylight near a window from different angles, attempting to capture the color and flashes.

While Vivianite has been found in a number of localities around the world, including stunning specimens in Bolivia, availability is limited. As the most brilliant gemmy blue-green colors with glowing luster and prismatic crystals seem to prefer forming in the most remote difficult to access areas of the planet. Making Vivianite difficult to obtain and quality specimens remain highly valued among collectors. This Vivianite specimen is from the most recent discovery of Vivianite nodules, found near the Cauaburi river, Pico da Neblina national park, a remote area deep in the Amazon Rainforest. The richly pigmented deep blue-greens of Vivianite crystals from this locality seem to capture and reflect the beauty and colors of the Amazon rainforest.

Things To Know About Vivianite

Vivianite is an unstable hydrous iron phosphate mineral, occurring in areas rich in iron and manganese. When freshly unearthed, Vivianite crystals are colorless and transparent. Once the Vivianite nodules are opened and the crystals inside are exposed to light, they quickly oxidize, transforming into a rich indigo blue, blue-green or deep green color. This change in color occurs naturally when the crystals come in contact with UV light from the sun. While certain gems and minerals can fade overtime with repeated sunlight or light exposure, Vivianite darkens due to oxidation by deprotonation (not by oxygen in the air). The oxidation of Vivianite is an internal reaction caused by photons (particles of light energy) entering the crystal and causing iron atoms to oxidize. Prolonged light exposure can cause Vivianite to turn deep indigo blue or almost black.

How To Care For Vivianite

Vivianite is light sensitive. To preserve the color and integrity of your Vivianite, we recommend displaying Vivianite in low light areas, away from sunlight and bright windows. Some collectors store their Vivianite in cotton-lined boxes in a cabinet or drawer, creating a display area especially designated for their light sensitive crystals and minerals. For those of us who enjoy seeing and holding our crystals, small or medium sized Vivianite crystals are an excellent option, we can take them out to enjoy for awhile and then easily put them away into their safe space. Vivianite is a softer crystal at 1.5-2 on MOH's hardness scale, we recommend handling with a little extra care to prevent breaking any of the delicate crystals.
